Using a Multiple Experts System to Classify Fluorescence Intensity in Antinuclear Autoantibodies Analysis

چکیده
At the present, Indirect Immunofluorescence (IIF) is the recommended method for the detection of antinuclear autoantibodies (ANA). IIF diagnosis requires estimating both fluorescent intensity and pattern description, but resources and adequately trained personnel are not always available for these tasks. In this respect, an evident medical demand is the development of Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) tools that can offer a support to physician decision. In this paper we firstly propose a strategy to reliably label the image data set by using the diagnoses performed by different physicians, and then we present a system to classify the fluorescent intensity. Such a system adopts a Multiple Experts System architecture (MES), based on the classifier selection paradigm. Two different selection rules are discussed. The approach has been successfully tested on an annotated database of IIF images.

A Slightly Supervised Approach for Positive/Negative Classification of Fluorescence Intensity in HEp-2 Images
Indirect Immunofluorescence on HEp-2 slides is the recommended technique to detect antinuclear autoantibodies in patient serum. Such slides are read at the fluorescence microscope by experts of IIF, who classify the fluorescence intensity, recognize mitotic cells and classify the staining patterns for each well. The crucial need of accurately performed and correctly reported laboratory determin...

Serum samples from patients with confirmed human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) were tested for cytoplasmic, nuclear, and platelet autoantibodies and rheumatoid factor. The indirect fluorescence antinuclear antibody test on Hep-2 cells demonstrated antinuclear titers of > or = 40 and > or = 160 in 44 and 10%, respectively, of serum samples from HGE patients. Two patients (4%) had anticytoplasm...
متن کاملCorrection: Chronic Malaria Revealed by a New Fluorescence Pattern on the Antinuclear Autoantibodies Test
BACKGROUND Several clinical forms of malaria such as chronic carriage, gestational malaria or hyper-reactive malarial splenomegaly may follow a cryptic evolution with afebrile chronic fatigue sometimes accompanied by anemia and/or splenomegaly. Conventional parasitological tests are often negative or not performed, and severe complications may occur. Extensive explorations of these conditions o...

The horseradish peroxidase bridge method described by Mason, Phifer, Spicer, Swallow, and Dreskin (1969) has been found to be as sensitive and specific as fluorescence methods for detecting antinuclear factor and gastric parietal cell antibody, and to a lesser extent, antibodies to smooth muscle and mitochondria. However, the method has at least four practical advantages over fluorescence techn...
متن کاملComparison of multiplex, ELISA and immunofluorescence for detecting autoantibodies in JIA patients
Purpose Detection of antinuclear antibodies has traditionally been performed by immunofluorescence (IFA) on fixed culture cells or tissues with reactivity being reported as a fluorescence pattern associated to one or more nuclear antigens. For this study, we compared results from IFA testing with a multiplex antinuclear antibody assay on a panel of patient serum samples previously evaluated by ...
